Gombe is a forward looking state with significant economic reasources and excellent mineral resources potentials. Created on October 1 1996 out of the former Bauchi State. It is located in the north eastern zone, right within the expansive savannah region and shares a common boundary with the states of Borno, Taraba, Adamamwa and Bauchi.
Gombe State has an area 20,265 Square Kilometers with a population 2.4 Million with its Capital in Gombe. Other major cities include Dukku, Billiri, Bajoga and Kaltungo. Gombe State has various ethnic groups like Tangale, Terawa, Waja, Kumo, Fulani, Kanuri, Bolewa, Jukun, Pero/Shonge, Tula, Cham, Lunguda, Dadiya, Banbuka , Hausa and Kamo/Awak among others.
Gombe has two distinct climates, the dry season (November-March) and the rainy season (April-October) with an average rainfall of 850mm. The State is headed by the Executive Governor Alh (Dr) Muhammad Danjuma Goje and 24 State House Assembly members. Gombe has 11 Local Government Areas and 14 Emirates /chiefdoms. It has 3 Senators and 6 Members in the National Assembly.
The present administration in the State is providing the critical leadership needed to maximize these opportunities under an enabling environment created by government and the empowerment of the people to participate in productive ventures. Government continues to work to create the right conditions for competition, liberalization, openness and accountability, core values which will sustain the prosperity of our people and communities.
There are a number of investment opportunities in agriculture, water supply, power generation, solid minerals, industries, housing and tourism development to be found in Gombe State. Below are snapshots of the various sectors that Gombe State has developed
AGRICULTURE: As a major food basket of the nation, Most of its 20,266Km2 landmass is cultivable. About 80 percent of the population are engaged in agriculture. The state government has put in plans for the construction of additional dams to significantly enhance the total land area available for irrigation. A number of food and cash crops and livestocks are produced in the state. They include: Cereals: Maize, Soghum,Rice and wheats: Legumes: Cowpeas, groundnuts,soya beans and bambara nuts. Fruits: Orange, Lemon, Mango, Guava, Paw-paw and grapes.Vegetables: Tomatoes, pepper, onions, okra, pumpkin and melon. Tree Crops: Gum Arabic, Kenaf, sugar cane, sunflower and ginger. Fisheries and LIvestock: cattle, sheep,goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits and fish of different varieties
WATER SUPPLY: The State Administration is investing efforts and resources to tap into the water resource potentials of the state and exploits the benefits of the hydrological infrastructure already in place. Beyond providing irrigation water to meet agricultural production targets, the three dams are central to government's effort at providing portable water for domestic & industrial use.
POWER GENERATION & SOLID MINERALS: The multipurpose Dadinkowa Dam is Nigeria's second largest dam, after kainji. It has sufficient hydropower generation capacity to meet the requirements of the six North East states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi and Gombe. However, the hydro power potential is yet to be exploited.
INDUSTRIES: The industrial landscape of Gombe State is dotted by a handful of industries with Ashaka Cement Plc the most outstanding. Other industries include the two cotton ginneries in the State capital, Gombe and a third in Kumo, Akko Local Government Areas. The ginneries process locally produced cotton into lint that are sold to textile firms.
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: As a young state, Gombe State needs quality housing to meet both residential and commercial needs. GSIPDC has been mandated to address the accomodation problems in the state. To strenghten the company, government has transferred ownership to all its housing estates to the company.GSPIDC is developing or promoting several housing estates/projects in the state. Shongo Housing Estate is the first in this regard.
TOURISM & LEISURE: With its scenic landscape and tourism resources, plus a pleasant and accomodating people. Gombe has the potential to become a major tourism destination in Nigeria. There are various natural attractions,historical sights and landscapes. Gombe can now boast of a mordern airport that will cater for domestic and international air travelling needs of its citizens. The Airport is sited at Liwenti village some 10 kilometers away from Gombe.
ROADS & INFRASTRUCTURES: Since coming into office in 2003, the present administration has constructed over 50 asphalt laid roads with proper concrete drainages in each road to ease transport mobility in the state capital of Gombe. In the same vien, more than 30 other roads have been construcuted in Local Governments and rural areas of the state. More of such roads are being planned for both Gombe metropolis and the rural areas that are not as yet served by mordern roads.
